Los Gigantes Desert Island Discs
Desert Island Discs
DESERT ISLAND DISCS is a long running BBC Radio 4 programme. It was first broadcast on January 29th 1942 and is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest running music programme in the history of radio.
Guests are asked to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them to a desert island, discussion of their choices permitting a review of their life. They also choose one book (excluding the Bible and the works of Shakespeare which are already deemed present on the island) and one luxury item which must be inanimate and have no practical use.
While not quite a Desert Island , Tenerife does lay claim to having many castaways from the UK . In this feature we put the Desert Island Discs theme to those who have made Los Gigantes their home , frequent returning visitors and also those people who have come to Los Gigantes for the first time .
In the Los Gigantes version of Desert Island Discs , Castaways choose their all time top ten favourite music recordings on CD , one choice from the world of literature , a magazine subscription - delivered by message in a bottle post - and one luxury item they could not envisage living without .
The prestige of being Los Gigantes first ever Castaway belongs to Bert Harrison . Bert , originally from Gloucestershire refuses to divulge his precise age but does confess to owning his below top ten favourites on their original wax drum format ( kids : ask Mum and Dad ) . Bert lives with his partner Alison in Los Gigantes and is currently employed as indispensable kitchen anchor man at Los Gigantes Premier Restaurant   Harbour Lites

What special significance does track No1 hold for you ?
The song reminds me of when I first met Alison the love of my life . The words could not be more true . If you care about someone you should tell them . Garth Brooks lyrics in this song are very poignant .

Which work of literature would you take to your desert island ?
500 Nations by Alvin M. Josephy Jnr . This book puts most aims of the human race into perspective and you could get back to basic living which on a desert island would be useful .

Which magazine subscription would you take out ?
Astronomy Magazine . Would help me observe the heavens , keep up to date with astronomical movements and major events in our skies through the telescope below .

What luxury item would be indispensable to you ?
Astro Telescope with multi eye pieces , but , basic ( assuming there is no electricity available ) to view heavenly bodies as no artificial light could contaminate the skies . It could be used for viewing shipping although the images would probably be upside down .

What first brought you to Los Gigantes ? What special appeal does it hold for you ?
I first came to los Gigantes on holiday staying at the Los Gigantes Hotel . I missed breakfast so I ate in a cafe just outside the hotel called Sherazade ( now called TJ's ) . Inside I met Alison and fell head over heels in love with her . So the special appeal to Los Gigantes for me is that I came out here to be with her . We have been here together ever since and still enjoy each others company .
