DESERT ISLAND DISCS is a long running BBC Radio 4 programme. It was first broadcast on January 29th 1942 and is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest running music programme in the history of radio.
Guests are asked to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them to a desert island, discussion of their choices permitting a review of their life. They also choose one book (excluding the Bible and the works of Shakespeare which are already deemed present on the island) and one luxury item which must be inanimate and have no practical use. |

While not quite a Desert Island , Tenerife does lay claim to having many castaways from the UK . In this feature we put the Desert Island Discs theme to those who have made Los Gigantes their home , frequent returning visitors and also those people who have come to Los Gigantes for the first time .
In the Los Gigantes version of Desert Island Discs , Castaways choose their all time top ten favourite music recordings on CD , one choice from the world of literature , a magazine subscription - delivered by message in a bottle post - and one luxury item they could not envisage living without . |

Although he has been residing and working in Los Gigantes foralmost nine years , Jason Burke , the latest Los Gigantes Castaway , confesses that in some respects , he is still waiting for his boat to come in : here , as in every where else in the world , the streets are not paved with gold and you have to work hard for your aspirations and objects of desire , as Jason explains lower down on this page . Originally from Edenfield in the UK , Jason describes his occupation as " Name a job - Yes ! " and his age as 16 + 9 .
(Jason recently won first prize for his costume in this years Los Gigantes Carnival , along with his Mini-Me counterpart . You can view the gallery of Carnival images here )

| What special significance does track No1 hold for you ? |
| Every time I feel a little knocked back or out of sorts , a song like this one always gives me a boost - I'll be back ! |
| |
| Which work of literature would you take to your desert island ? |
I am not an avid reader of books apart from autobiographies . I have only ever read one twice on the trot , so my choice of book would be " The Downing Street Years " by Margaret Thatcher . |
| |
| Which magazine subscription would you take out ? |
"Attitude" a magazine that shows you what it's really like to live in another dimension . |
| |
| What luxury item would be indispensable to you ? |
If it's a desert island would a toothbrush be considered a luxury ? If not , then it's a cork screw . I would hate to happen across a bottle of wine and not be able to open it in a civilized manner . |
| |
| What first brought you to Los Gigantes ? What special appeal does it hold for you ? |
AThe possibility of a job in the sun , just for a year or so - a job for fun and less stress . That was nearly nine years ago . Now things are completely different to how I would have imagined them to be when I first arrived here . The mansion , the 12 metre sports boat and the Rolls still have not arrived yet .
