DESERT ISLAND DISCS is a long running BBC Radio 4 programme. It was first broadcast on January 29th 1942 and is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest running music programme in the history of radio.
Guests are asked to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them to a desert island, discussion of their choices permitting a review of their life. They also choose one book (excluding the Bible and the works of Shakespeare which are already deemed present on the island) and one luxury item which must be inanimate and have no practical use. |

While not quite a Desert Island , Tenerife does lay claim to having many castaways from the UK . In this feature we put the Desert Island Discs theme to those who have made Los Gigantes their home , frequent returning visitors and also those people who have come to Los Gigantes for the first time .
In the Los Gigantes version of Desert Island Discs , Castaways choose their all time top ten favourite music recordings on CD , one choice from the world of literature , a magazine subscription - delivered by message in a bottle post - and one luxury item they could not envisage living without . |

Popular and respected entertainer Mike Stone has been a part of the Los Gigantes firmament here for many years , entrancing audiences with his unique repertoire of acoustic guitar mixed with some hilarious satires of classic chart hits , and original superbly amusing and witty compositions of his own . Mike does not perform live very often , so If you get the chance to see him while on holiday in Los Gigantes jump at the chance - you won't regret it !
Mike , 62 , is a retired civil servant originally from Sheffield and lives here with wife Hilary .

| What special significance does track No1 hold for you ? |
| My wife and I had our first dance to this record ( it was almost our last , as my chat up line " You are a beautiful woman - for your age ! " was not taken in the jocular manner in which it was intended....our next dance did not take place until a year later ! ) Although Lionel Ritchie isn't my favourite artist , I have always admired the way he can adapt to so many musical styles - from soul to slow ballads - and he does this one beautifully . |
| |
| Which work of literature would you take to your desert island ? |
A Short History Of Almost Everything by Bill Bryson . I will never tire of reading this book as it contains so much information about almost everything and reminds the reader constantly of mans insignificance . |
| |
| Which magazine subscription would you take out ? |
The Sunday Times Magazine - in the hope that the rest of the paper would be delivered with it ! A whole weeks reading in one paper . |
| |
| What luxury item would be indispensable to you ? |
Does a wind up torch/ radio count as a luxury item ? Probably too practical . A Sunseeker 45 Powerboat is pretty luxurious though and might come in handy if ever the desert island began to pall . |

| What first brought you to Los Gigantes ? What special appeal does it hold for you ? |
We first came to spend the New Year in warmer climes and fell in love with los Gigantes because in those days it had style and class . People used to dress up to go out . there were lots of nice restaurants and bars , and Karaoke was unheard of . Sadly , with the demise of such places as The Royal Sun , the class is disappearing as indeed are many of the regular visitors .
