The Wigan Observer , November 4 2003
Right
at the end of the marina in Los Gigantes , Tenerife is the
Harbour Lites restaurant .
But if you're not quick you might not get the
chance to try it .
Because Harbour Lites is a place where it is
always advisable to book , preferably on the very first
day of a holiday as some people have been known to wait
10 days for a table .
And running that most popular restaurant is
a woman from Wigan .
Gail Wadsworth , who previously worked at hotels
in Wigan and Yorkshire , moved to the island seven years
ago after the death of her dad .
Her Partner , Steve Horne , who comes from Leeds
, is the chef and together they have made Harbour Lites
the undoubted success it is today .
Renowned for its Mexican menu , a speciality
of the house is Fajitas - chicken , sirloin steak (or both)
or Atlantic prawns all sautéed with onions , peppers
, mushrooms and flavoured with a little fresh chilli , herbs
and spices , served with tortillas and three different salsas
and presented at your table on a sizzling platter - and
I , personally , would recommend it to anybody !
|
Another
speciality is Texas Devil Hot Chilli which comes in three strengths
- Regular Mummies Boy ; Chernobyl Meltdown and the ultimate
Chilli Challenge - Core of the Sun .
There are a wide range of main courses , other than
Mexican , along with tasty starters and sweets . And Harbour
Lites side salad , which comes encased in a ' bowl' of iceberg
lettuce , is deservedly entitled ' Eat Me'.
A former pupil of St George's primary school ,
Gail was born in Baron Street , Scholes . Her family moved to
Beech Hill and she went on to Gidlow Middle school and Whitley
High .
Now home is an apartment overlooking the picturesque
harbour in the small village that is just 30 minutes but worlds
away from the better known and brasher resort of Playa de Las
Americas .
And Harbour Lites , with its outdoor tables and intimate interior
, is a far cry from the Bellingham Hotel on Wigan Lane or The
Beeches in Standish .
Gail , 38 , said : "I remember working for
Mr Thomas at The Bellingham and Mr Peter and Jim Moore at The
Beeches . Then I moved to Ilkley where I was hotel manager at
Rombalds .
"I moved out here after my dad died in 1996
. I needed to do something different and this was it ...but
I've met a lot of people from Wigan since coming here!"
And Gail even caters for those Wiganers missing
their staple diet ! Away from the Mexican menu for which the
Harbour Lites is famous , tucked onto the Bistro menu is...Steak
Pie (tender steak in shortcrust pastry served with sugar snap
peas , chipped potatoes and gravy ) .
